In a joint statement, the governments of both countries revealed Timor-Leste had notified the Australian government of its wish to terminate the 2006 Treaty on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea (CMATS) and that Australia had recognised its neighbour’s right to initiate the termination of the treaty.
As a result, the CMATS treaty will cease to be in force within three months of the notification.
