French giant Total has signed a definitive agreement with Russia's largest independent gas producer Novatek to buy a 10% stake in the Novatek-led Arctic LNG 2 gas and condensate development on the Gydan Peninsula in West Siberia, writes Vladimir Afanasiev.

Novatek said that the deal is set to close before the end of March but did not say if the agreement still needed to be approved by the government commission for foreign investments, headed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
