TOTAL has won a 30% stake in a new 25-year contract to operate the giant Al Shaheen oilfield off Qatar, dealing a blow to Denmark’s Maersk Oil, which has been operator for 24 years.
Total will take charge of the 300,000 barrel per day field in July 2017 when Maersk’s current production sharing agreement expires. Al Shaheen accounts for close to half of Qatar’s oil production and includes a very large volume of oil, albeit in a thin reservoir with high viscosity.
