France's Total is under fire for allegedly breaching a duty of care owed to communities around Lake Albert, an environmentally sensitive area on the border of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Acting for the Kampala-based Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO), French human rights association Survie and Friends of the Earth have filed suit against Total in a Paris court for “breach of due vigilance”, according to AFIEGO chief executive Dickens Kamugisha, a former state attorney with the public prosecutor.
