AN INVESTIGATION into the grounding of drilling rig Transocean Winner on a Scottish island has uncovered failings with the towing operation that led to the incident and found it was likely to have occurred even if a towline had not snapped.

The semi-submersible ran aground on the northern coast of the Isle of Lewis on 8 August last year while being towed from Stavanger to Malta for scrapping by tugboat ALP Forward after the vessel’s towline was severed in rough weather.
