Born on 18 December 1915, Laborde grew up in Marksville, Louisiana.
Laborde designed and built the first submersible offshore drilling rig, named Mr Charlie, for his newly-formed company Odeco (Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company) in 1954.
He revamped offshore supply boat design.
