The Belut Laut-1 wildcat, which has reached its prognosed total depth of 4984 metres, had oil shows with high gas readings from a 155-metre Oligocene sandstone interval.

Logging indicated the sandstones are of poor porosity. The well will now be plugged and abandoned with oil shows.

However, Belut Laut and the previous Gajah Laut Utara-1 well, both drilled by semi-submersible Ocean General, and the successful Ca Rong Do appraisal well in Vietnamese waters earlier this year have confirmed the hydrocarbon potential of the Oligocene section of the Nam Con Son basin.
