The UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has opened a criminal investigation into Soma Oil & Gas, a small, privately-owned company that managed to secure a major exploration deal in Somalia in 2013 that gave it first right of refusal over a huge swathe of offshore acreage in return for shooting 2D seismic.

The SFO said its criminal probe relates to “allegations of corruption in Somalia”, saying it welcomes “approaches from anyone with inside information on all our cases including this one”.
