Tom Botts, who chairs the industry's Step Change leadership team in the UK, admitted that improvements in safety in the British offshore sector have not been achieved fast enough and "our performance has plateaued and even gone a little bit in the wrong direction".
He added that "year-on-year performance improvements in fatal accidents and major injuries has gone the wrong way in the past year", although since the Step Change safety initiative was launched in 1997/98 there has been a continuous overall improvement of something over 20% in the statistics on fatal accidents and major injury rates.
