Human rights groups praised the announcement that an agreement in principle had been reached to settle the protracted legal action in the US.
Oil major Unocal had been hauled to court by a group of 14 anonymous Burmese refugees and a campaigner for Earth Rights International (ERI).
The lawsuit claimed that Unocal was party to the Burmese junta's use of forced labour during the Yadana gas field development in which the company is a partner and therefore benefited from it.
