The cost of cooling gas until it becomes a liquid, which also requires specially-built tankers to transport the liquefied product, has become cost-effective in the wake of recent high gas prices resulting from spiking demand.
BP, CMS Energy, Chevron, El Paso and Enron are swelling the ranks of companies so far committed to LNG.
A spokeswoman for the American Gas Association (AGA) said that although LNG is a small segment of the US gas supply market, it does provide necessary diversification for consumers.
