The US is ending waivers offered to buyers of Iranian oil from 2 May, instead demanding they stop all purchases or face the consequences as it targets Iran’s economic lifeline.
The announcement drew rebukes from both China and the European Union and caused oil prices to rally.
"We're going to zero. We're going to zero across the board," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters after the White House made the announcement early this week.
