US Defence Secretary Mark Esper was set to urge Nato allies later this week to contribute more to the defence of Saudi Arabia and other oil and gas rich, Arab countries in the Persian Gulf to counter Iran, writes Nassir Shirkhani.
This plan is part of a broader US campaign to get Nato to take on more responsibility for security in the Persian Gulf, including pleas for nations to send ships, aircraft and air defence systems to the region.
