VRJ comprises Russia's Zarubezhneft (50%), PetroVietnam (35%) and Japan's Idemitsu Oil&Gas (15%).
Zarubezhneft said the 03-9-DM-2X well flowed 3800 bpd in Block 9-3 in the offshore Cuu Long basin.
The Russian company said hydrocarbons reserves in Block 9-3 were estimated at 395 million barrels to 550 million barrels.
It is the first commercial find made by VRJ in Block 9-3. Several sub-economic exploration wells have been drilled in recent years.
