The consortium, made up of Vietnamese national oil company PetroVietnam, Russia's Zarubezhneft and Japan's Idemitsu Oil & Gas, drilled its first-ever well last September in block 9-3 in the offshore Cuu Long basin.
The well turned out to be non-commercial, said a consortium source, though some oil was recovered.
A second well is likely to be sunk in May once a well services contract is finalised.
