Saipem refused to comment, but several sources said the Italian company had been chosen and Aramco has indicated that the contract will be signed by 8 March.
One source said that the selection was made in February, and Saipem and Aramco have been in intense negotiations “because it appears Saipem did not offer the lowest price”.
Bids were submitted on 4 January by Saipem, J Ray McDermott, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Swiber-Rawabi, Gulf Piping and National Petroleum Construction Company.
