Since November, CNR has piloted an AP-1.88 hovercraft, operated by Alaska-based Northern Transportation, 65 kilometres along the Athabasca River between Fort McMurray and its Horizon oil sands project.
A spokesperson said it needed an alternative to travelling back and forth on the region's main highway artery.
