The northern part of Russia’s remote Yamal-Nenets autonomous region will witness over the next two years the largest number of greenfield oil and gas developments to be commissioned in a single area of the country since the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The region was long considered the domain of a single operator — state gas monopoly Gazprom — but in recent years other companies have moved in, including state oil giant Rosneft, private operator Lukoil, independent gas producer Novatek and Gazprom oil subsidiary, Gazpromneft.
