BP and Statoil, joint operators of the In Amenas field along with Sonatrach, have both reported an incident on the gas field on Wednesday which Statoil termed "serious".
Numerous reports indicate that six or more oil workers were abducted by attackers in the early-morning raid with Japanese and French personnel said to have been taken. No official authorities or oil companies have made any comment on possible kidnappings, however.
